In Types of Chemical Reactions Worksheet, we will look at various types of chemical reactions. First we look some important definitions of types of chemical reactions.

Chemical reactions can be categorized as one of five basic types. Having a complete understanding of these reaction types will help predict the products of an unknown chemical reaction. Are you know that what are reactants and products of chemical reactions. During a chemical reaction, the substances that react are known as reactants, whereas the substances formed during a chemical reaction are known as products.

Types of Chemical Reactions

The five basic types of chemical reactions are combination or synthesis, decomposition, single-replacement, double-replacement, and combustion. Exploring the reactants and products of a given chemical reaction will allow you to place it into one of these types. Some chemical reactions will fit into more than one type.

1. Combination Reactions

In a combination reaction one single substance is made from two or more substances. If two or more reactants take part in a reaction to form single reactant then it is called combination reaction or synthesis reaction. The general structure of a combination reaction is:

A+B→AB

2. Decomposition Reactions

If a complex molecule (bigger molecule) is decomposed to two or more simpler (smaller) molecules then it is called decomposition reaction. In decomposition reactions a compound breaks down into two or more simpler substances. The general structure of a decomposition reaction is:

AB→A+B

3. Single-Replacement Reactions

A reaction in which more reactive element replaces a less reactive element of adjacent reactant substance is called single replacement or displacement reaction. The general structure of a single replacement reaction is:

A+BC→AC+B

4. Double-Replacement Reactions

A reaction in which positive and negative ions of two ionic compounds get exchanged to form two new compounds is called double replacement or displacement reaction. The general structure of a double replacement reaction is:

AB+CD→AD+CB

5. Combustion Reactions

In combustion reactions burning of compounds is involved. Usually, a hydrocarbon (a reactant) reacts with oxygen gas (O2) to yield carbon dioxide gas (CO2) and a water molecule (H2O). Heat and/or light are produced in combustion reactions due to exothermic behavior of combustion reactions.

A + O2 → H2O + CO2
