What Are Sight Words?

The words that you see must be memorized to aid a child’s learning to write and read. The process of learning the sight word will allow a child to identify these words in an instant — at a glance and without the need to break down the words into individual letters. This is the method that proficient readers can recognize the majority of words. Understanding frequent or high-frequency words through sight makes reading much easier and quicker since the reader does not have to stop pronouncing each word alphabet by alphabet.

Sight Words are memorized so that a child can recognize commonly used or phonetically irregular words at a glance, without needing to go letter-by-letter.

Other words used to define sight words are: Service wordsinstant words (because they should be recognized immediately), snap words (because you’ll know they are easy to realize in a flash), and high-frequency words. They are also called Dolch word and the words Fry which are the two most frequently used sight word lists.

Types of Sight Words

Sight words are classified into two types:

  • Frequently Used Words: Words that are frequently used throughout the English language, including theycan, and could, will. The ability to memorize these words makes reading more effortless and enjoyable since the child is already familiar with most terms and can concentrate on learning new words. For instance, having a basic understanding of the Dolch Sight words would allow you to read around 50% of the newspaper or 80percent of a children’s book.
  • Non-Phonetic Words: Words cannot be decoded phonetically, such as purchasetalk, and talk. Learning these words using natural spellings and pronunciations can teach not just these words but also helps the user identify similar words such as guyswalk, and one of the.

Numerous sight word lists are used in various ways, including Dolch, Fry, Top 150, and Core Curriculum. Naturally, there’s a lot of overlap across these lists, but the Dolch sight words list is the most widely used and most popular.

These words make up more than 80% of the terms found in the typical children’s books and 50 percent of the vocabulary found in adult writing. When a child is familiar with the words on this list and phrases, reading becomes much more enjoyable since the child will be able to concentrate attention on the left words.
